The Insole family story mirrors Cardiff’s rise and decline during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The Insoles were pioneering coal-shippers and mine-owners, railwaymen and docksmen during the three generations of Welsh Steam Coal’s dominance of world industry.
The family reached the height of its prosperity in the late 19th Century having acquired large land holdings, central to which was their home, which survives in Llandaff, on the outskirts of Cardiff.
Inspired by William Burges' work on Cardiff Castle, James Harvey Insole redesigned his modest house in the gothic revival style, which can still be seen in some of the rooms and the architecture of the time.
After his death his son Fredrick would go on to redecorate most of the rooms of Insole Court in a toned down more homely style.
In 1932 Cardiff Corporation acquired the estate to make way for Cardiff's orbital road system (Western Avenue); the ornamental park was sold for housing and the streets given the Insole names they carry to this day. The last of the family left in 1938.
Since then Insole Court has become a much loved focus on the community. However, when darkness falls and the staff lock up, Insole Court doesn't seem to be empty after all.
Over the years many strange things have been seen by staff members and visitors which cannot be explained rationally. From the sounds of children coming from empty rooms, a mysterious woman in black watching from the staircase and the sight of a ghostly black dog that vanishes into thin air. Could Insole Court be housing the spirits of the family that put so much love into the creation of their ideal family home?
Join us as we explore the rooms of this incredible house, recounting the history of the building and the family and of course telling you the many paranormal experiences that have been reported over the years.
There are no gimmicks or actors lined up to jump out on us and this is NOT a paranormal investigation, nor can we guarantee any ghostly phenomena will occur. We have faithfully researched the history of the building and the paranormal stories we tell you are true accounts of what the staff, visitors and guests on the tours have experienced at Insole Court over the years.
