Cardigan Castle dates back to the 1100s. It has seen invasion, rebellion, dereliction and revitalisation. Built by Norman Lord Gilbert FitzRichard de Clare the castle has been passed between the English and the Welsh with each holding the castle due to its strategic position.
The present house within the grounds called Castle Green House was built in the early 1800s by John Bowen and has passed through various hands including being the home of several Sheriffs of Cardiganshire. In May 1940 it was purchased by its last private owner Barbara Olwen Wood known locally as 'Miss Wood'.
It was taken over during World War II by the South Wales Borderers, with 40 men billeted there. After the War Miss Wood continued to live in the house that was slowly falling down around her. Unable to afford the cost of living in such a big house, over the years more and more rooms were closed off until finally Miss Wood lived in just 1 room on the ground floor eventually in 1984 the house was declared unfit for human habitation.
Miss Wood would eventually be moved to a local care home and in April 2003 the local authority purchased the castle with the view to restore it to its former glory. It is now currently a tourist attraction with accommodation on offer as well.
However, over the decades strange things have been reported by its various owners and by staff and volunteers. Footsteps heard coming down the halls where there is no one there, clear voices having conversations coming from empty rooms and phantom figures seen standing and walking the corridors, including a woman in black who seems to vanish when she is spoken to.
